The feeding of the fetus begins with the beginning of pregnancy, especially in the 1st 3 months, and for this reason in particular the mother’s nutrition is important even several months prior to pregnancy as well as throughout pregnancy and the period of breastfeeding.

A pregnant woman’s intake of an insufficient food or an excessive amount of certain nutrients may cause birth defects or medical problems for the fetus. Also, pregnant women who suffer from malnutrition put their fetuses at risk of neurological disorders and disabilities.

An estimated 24% of babies worldwide are born with a weight less due to a lack of proper nutrition. Also, some personal habits such as drinking alcoholic beverages or large amounts of caffeine can negatively and irreversibly affect the child’s development which occurs in the early stages of pregnancy.
